Fishing Yesterday's Gulf CoastNot All Fishing Stories
Are Lies. When legendary guide Barney Farley worked the Texas coastal waters out
of Port Aransas in the first half of the twentieth century, the sleepy little
fishing village was known as the Tarpon Capital of the World. Plentiful beyond
imagination, this great sport fish was caught from boats and piers in abundance.
Even President Franklin Roosevelt traveled to Port Aransas in order to fish for
tarpon with Farley and his fellow guides. Sadly, catching a tarpon in the Port
Aransas area today is a rarity. In these stories and reflections, Farley imparts
a lifetime of knowledge about fish -- tarpon, trout, redfish, ling, catfish,
drum, pompano, jack, kingfish, you name it.
