Fishing Yesterday's Gulf Coast
- Not All Fishing
Stories Are Lies. When legendary guide Barney Farley worked the Texas
coastal waters out of Port Aransas in the first half of the twentieth
century, the sleepy little fishing village was known as the Tarpon
Capital of the World. Plentiful beyond imagination, this great sport
fish was caught from boats and piers in abundance. Even President
Franklin Roosevelt traveled to Port Aransas in order to fish for tarpon
with Farley and his fellow guides. Sadly, catching a tarpon in the Port
Aransas area today is a rarity.
Silver King
-Tommy Bogue, a retired U.S. Navy chief boatswain's mate, fondly
remembers his days as a young sailor stationed in the Florida Keys. To relive an
old dream he returns to the Keys with his young bride to fish again for tarpon
the legendary Silver King. The trip turns into more of an adventure than he had
reckoned understatement! and its imperfect resolution is bittersweet, but not
unsatisfying.
